Crider Blog #1

Denotation: This picture is very simple. It has a simple background with only four objects being displayed. The bunny is obviously reaching to get a carrot or food, standing on stacked objects.
Connotation: This simple picture can display messages much more complex than it's composition. I relate this picture to the great length people or in this case bunnies will go to achieve what they want deep down. The bland background makes the objects pop, and support the message I received by showing that nothing else in this moment in time is significant. The bunny is simply focused on the prize, balancing his safety in order to achieve what he needs.

Denotation:"Locked Out," displays an extremely small house or maybe
even a shed standing alone on an island of keys. There is nothing around except for a small walkway that just leads to water. The island is composed of keys and even underneath the water there is keys. The ground is actually made of keys while the small building is wrapped in chains really displaying the fact that it is indeed locked.
Connotation:I think this picture demonstrates isolation, a feeling people have often. This idea that people sometimes think they are alone on certain beliefs or that no one else quite understands. This relates directly to the picture in that no key quite fits the lock leaving it alone on a mound of failed attempts. Nothing else but water and sky remain.

Denotation: A farm landscape is pictured with distant windmills. There is also an extremely large sun setting in the distance with birds flying overhead. To the left, a house is pictured which looks to be old and a bit run down.
Connotation: I was confused at first about what message this image gives. Then after a bit of looking at the details, the message I received was that at the end of the day...life still goes on. A simple pretty scenery which just reminds me of life in general is showing the end of a day. As bad as life may be, it will go on. This relates to the picture because the sun is setting, but the birds will still fly which in my perspective represent life.

  1. I really like those pictures, especially the first one. And I feel like you got the connotations right. And I thought it was amazing that we both agree that the third picture is depicting the sunset, even though it could be a dawn as well. The artist did the nice job to depict that. And i felt the same way about the picture as well. Nice job on the assignment

  2. My favorite picture is the locked up house, although many might see it as somewhat of an isolation...i see that the open water leaves room for one to have endless possibilities. The owner of the house may be isolating himself by holing up inside...but the enviroment around him is actually very welcoming. A vast, open body of water has endless possibilities.

  3. I love the images. Who are they by?
The first picture reminds me of those fruit bowl portraits, where the focus is on just a few objects. I also noticed that the legs of the stool are distorted, I wonder if that was intentional.
The small house in chains has a real eery feel to it. I think the "Walkway" is really a dock, and so symbolizes how many people enter our lives, but very few have the right key. Maybe people are looking for the right key, or maybe they come with their own key, and if it doesn't fit they throw it away. I also saw that the house have more than one lock.
The last picture is much more realistic than the rest, and almost looks like a photograph. The dark house contrasts with the bright sun, and so the image has conflicting emotions.
    Very cool picks.
